Up North Press welcomes artists working across disciplines, including printmaking, photography, painting, sculpture, installation, fiber arts, interdisciplinary practices, and emerging media.

While we prioritize Wisconsin-based artists and those within the Upper Midwest, artists from other regions are welcome to apply.

The residency is designed for artists who have the ability to travel to and from the studio independently. Artists are responsible for their own transportation and lodging arrangements if needed.

Residencies are generally organized around monthly cohorts, with two artists participating each month.

We understand that artists balance work, teaching, caregiving, and other commitments. Scheduling can be flexible, and shorter residency periods may be accommodated when appropriate.

Artists have keypad access to:

• Printmaking presses and facilities

• Analog photography darkroom

• Digital scanning equipment

• Large flexible studio space

• Fabrication and woodworking tools

• Outdoor work areas and seasonal gardens

• Access to the Milwaukee River

Yes.

A small artist stipend of $250 is available to participating artists.

The stipend is distributed upon successful completion of residency requirements, including participation in public programming and residency documentation.

Artists are selected through an open application process based on:

• Artistic merit

• Clarity of project proposal

• Alignment with the residency's mission and schedule

• Commitment to experimentation and self-directed work

We strive to support a diverse range of artistic practices, perspectives, and lived experiences.

Artists are expected to:

• Actively utilize the residency facilities

• Participate in one public Open Studio event

• Contribute to residency documentation

• Participate in residency promotion and social media

• Donate one artwork, print, publication, or editioned work to support future residency fundraising efforts

Up North Press will feature each artist at the beginning of their residency through an introduction post highlighting their biography and proposed project.

Artists are asked to:

• Share at least one feed post documenting work created during the residency

• Share at least one feed post promoting their Open Studio event

• Contribute process images and stories throughout the residency

• Tag @UpNorthPress in residency-related content

Collaborative teams, artist collectives, and interdisciplinary partnerships are welcome to apply. Please indicate all participating artists within the application.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year.

For consideration in a specific month, we recommend applying at least 30 days in advance whenever possible.

Artists wishing to be considered for July 2026 should submit applications by June 28, 2026.

Absolutely. Artists retain ownership and copyright of all work created during the residency, with the exception of the donated artwork agreed upon as part of participation. This question comes up surprisingly often at artist residencies.
